Property group buys historic Save On Meats building, plans to renovate

Anthem Properties Group Ltd. has bought the Save On Meats building in East Vancouver, home of a diner and butcher shop that was recently featured on the Dragons’ Den spinoff TV show, The Big Decision.

Anthem announced that it plans to renovate the historic landmark, and will consolidate the Save On Meats businesses onto the ground-floor retail level.

Anthem also wants to create new loft-style office space on the building’s second, third and fourth levels. That plan is subject to getting approvals from city hall.

The Save On Meats building was built in 1891.

In November, Mark Brand, who owns the Save On Meats diner and butcher shop, got a helping hand for his struggling business from Arlene Dickinson of Dragons’ Den fame.

Brand was one of the subjects of The Big Decision, where Dickinson and fellow Dragons’ Den star Jim Treliving analyze businesses that are struggling.

In Brand’s case, Dickinson agreed to invest $250,000 in the business, which had been labouring under debt, in part because Brand spends a considerable amount of the business’ earnings on sustaining social enterprise programs for needy people in the Downtown Eastside.
